Chelsea Physic Garden – Britain’s second oldest botany haven

The Chelsea Physic Garden is an oasis of lush beauty and relaxation in the heart of the city of London. Founded by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in 1673, the Garden plays a significant role in the education, research and conservation of over 5000 species of plants. This verdant Garden is recognized as Britain’s oldest botanical garden after the University of Oxford Botanic Garden which was founded in 1621. The Garden was initiated with the main purpose of studying botany with regard to medicine which was historically known as ‘physic’. Thus the Garden was named the Chelsea Physic Garden.

The location site of the Chelsea Physic Garden was chosen so that it was situated close to the river. This was necessary for the survival of all the plants during Britain’s cold winter season and for the growth of foreign plants. A few years later, the Manor of Chelsea which covered an area of 4 acres, was purchased by Dr Hans Sloane who leased it to the Apothecaries Society at an annual charge of 5 pounds in perpetuity. A statue of Dr Hans Sloane can be seen within the Garden’s lush interior.

Various types of environments needed for the growth of diverse plants were built at the Chelsea Physic Garden. One such example is the Rock Garden that was completed in 1773. Renowned for being England’s oldest rock garden, this lovely garden features Icelandic lava, stony rocks of the Tower of London, flint and bricks. Numerous types of medicinal herbs and plants can also be seen at the Garden. Additionally, non-native plant species such as Britain’s largest outdoor olive tree are highlights to look out for when visiting the Garden.

Explore London and its many attractions in style when staying at the Millennium Chelsea Football Club. This chic hotel in London Chelsea lies at the centre of the Chelsea FC Stamford Bridge Complex just minutes away from King’s Road. Offering elegant guestrooms, state of the art conference facilities and a myriad of sumptuous dining outlets, this London hotel accommodation base is ideal for the lifestyle traveller seeking luxury and relaxation in the heart of the city.

Gaia’s Garden, Second Edition: A Guide To Home-Scale Permaculture
Product Description
The first edition of Gaiaâ??s Garden, sparked the imagination of Americaâ??s home gardeners, introducing permacultureâ??s central message: Working with Nature, not against her, results in more beautiful, abundant, and forgiving gardens. This extensively revised and expanded second edition broadens the reach and depth of the permaculture approach for urban and suburban growers.

Many people mistakenly think that ecological gardeningâ??which involves growing a wide range of edible and other useful plantsâ??can take place only on a large, multiacre scale. As Hemenway demonstrates, itâ??s fun and easy to create a â??backyard ecosystemâ? by assembling communities of plants that can work cooperatively and perform a variety of functions, including:

  • Building and maintaining soil fertility and structure
  • Catching and conserving water in the landscape
  • Providing habitat for beneficial insects, birds, and animals
  • Growing an edible â??forestâ? that yields seasonal fruits, nuts, and other foods

This revised and updated edition also features a new chapter on urban permaculture, designed especially for people in cities and suburbs who have very limited growing space. Whatever size yard or garden you have to work with, you can apply basic permaculture principles to make it more diverse, more natural, more productive, and more beautiful. Best of all, once itâ??s established, an ecological garden will reduce or eliminate most of the backbreaking work thatâ??s needed to maintain the typical lawn and garden.
