where do you find rocks for a rock garden?
I live in northern California and I don’t see rocks when I go on walks. Is there anyplace I can go to get medium to large sized rocks for my garden?

Are rocks good or bad to have in small gardens?
I’m in the process of redoing my garden and noticed that there are TONS of small rocks. Are they good or bad in allowing plants to grow? I currently have tons of weeds, but would it make a difference if I planted flowers? Do they have a negative or positive effect on gardens? Thanks!!
So should I put the rocks on the surface? It seems like they stop evaporation so… put them on the surface or in the soil?

Where can I find landscaping rocks to line a garden, in Colorado?
I want to line my garden with some nice, flat red rocks, sort of like what you would find on the flatirons in Boulder. However, when I go to home depot, they are $5/ piece. I’m hoping to line the garden for less than $25, any ideas?
Thanks for the suggestions, especially since yes, there are a lot of rocks in the Rocky Mountains? Any park names or areas by the side of the road where I can go exploring? Thank you all for the ideas.

How do I remove white rocks from my soil to start a flower garden?
I decided to plant a flower garden and as I began to clear the soil, I realized that someone had previously had a garden there and used white rocks to surround the flowers, so the soil is FULL of white rocks. What is the best way to remove them? Thanks for any help!

Flower garden design using desert plants rocks and water friendly desert ideas

When most people think of deserts they think of sand, cactus plant and tumbleweed. But the people living in desert area has a different opinion, they say that the desert is a beautiful area full of colors after the spring season. The same beauty can be replicated in our garden with good garden design. An additional benefit of the desert gardening is that it requires low maintenance and do not require watering and mulching. A garden designed with desert plants much suit for hot climate. Along with the desert plants some flowering plants will enrich its beauty.
Because there is a wide range of climatic conditions and temperature variations in the desert, from dry and hot during the day to cool at night, desert plants also do quite well in regions with cooler climates provided that rainfall is not excessive. Desert plants have evolved to conserve water and thrive under drought type conditions. Standing water or excessive moisture (such as too much rain) will cause vegetation to rot.
A surprising variety of plants grow in the desert including wildflowers, grasses, cacti, succulents, shrubs, and trees. When flowers are in bloom they display a dazzling array of colors. In addition, many desert plants come in a variety of shapes, sizes and textures, many of them quite dramatic in color and form. To ensure that our desert garden will thrive, use plant species that are hardy in our region. Consult the county extension service or a local nursery for more information. Yucca, agavas, desert willow, mesquite, saltbush, cacti and desert sage are some of the desert plants capable of growing in our garden.
All these plants provide a structural view to our garden. Desert willow is a large fast growing deciduous shrub with grayish-green leaves and showy white to pink flower clusters. It has an upright habit and prefers full sun. Saltbush is a small shrub with silvery leaves that grows 3 to 6 feet tall. It prefers full sun and will tolerate soils with high levels of mineral salts. It is often used for erosion control. Cacti are planted for their beautiful flowers. There are so many varieties that some people plant entire gardens of them.
Desert sage plants are evergreen shrubs with silvery-gray foliage that grow up to 4 feet tall. Desert sage has fragrant foliage and fragrant flowers that are bluish-purple in color and attract butterflies and birds. Good garden designs with few kinds of these desert plants enrich the beauty of the available space for the same. Along with the desert plants some rock arrangements also enrich the garden beauty. Lot of us have many ideas in improving our home gardens, but in these kind of garden design money is not an issue and our dream of good garden fulfill.

How To Put Landscaping Rocks Around Your House

Rocks and boulders add character to your landscape and bring accent to your design. They can also place layers or levels for your landscape to make an elevated area. In adding rocks, you have to place them in such a way that they will look natural.
Putting rocks can also increase the value of your landscape by making your yard maintenance-free instead of grass. Most of the time, rocks are more pleasing than grass lawn. There are individuals and companies who can do this work for you but if you want to place it yourself, there are a lot of things you can experiment on. Below are tips on how to place rocks in your landscape.
What are the steps in placing rocks in your landscape?
First, you have to kill the weeds and grass at the spot you want to put the rocks. You can use a weed or grass killer and it will help in preventing weeds and grass from sprouting in the future. If you have Bermuda grass, expect that it is harder to kill.
Second, you have to dig up the earth and try to get down to the roots of the grass. You should try to get as many roots and weeds as possible. You can use a shovel or a hoe in digging. Also, it is helpful to water the ground.
Third, you have to have a plan where to put the plants, shrubs and bushes. You can also mark the spots where you want to put your items. Dig a well for watering your plants so that the water can be a supply to the roots.
Fourth, you should place plastic sheeting so that it will prevent the weeds and grass from crawling over your rock lawn. The sheeting are available in your local gardening stores.
Fifth, Place your plants and make cuts at the sheeting. You can also place the bushes and shrubs on the spot you marked. Make sure that you dig using the appropriate depth for the roots.
Sixth, place the rocks on the plastic sheeting. You can also make levels or layers of rocks. Also, evenly disperse the rocks as the base.
In building rock gardens, note that you have to consider the space you are going to allot for the landscape. It could be small or large depending on the spot you chose. In larger spaces, you should be able to create a sprawling garden. But still, you should consider the space you allotted for the rocks before buying the materials.
Also, you should design the color that you are going to put on the rocks. It could be a collection of attractive colors such as red, sandstone and a lot more. The color will also impact the kind and color of plants you want to match with your rocks. Colors also contribute to total beauty of your garden.
With rocks, you will never go wrong with maintenance, beauty and design. You just have to be creative in making a rock lawn.

How To Use Rocks For Landscaping
To make a complete change over in the look of your back yard or front yard you could incorporate the use of rocks to make a vast difference to the entire landscaping. Placed in strategic places with plants and shrubs around it a rock can be a piece of artifact in your garden.
Different kinds of rocks
When you plan to add rocks to your landscaping don’t just think of the ordinary rocks you find lying around on a sandy beach or at the base of a mountain; you can get rocks in various shapes and sizes. Different stones with varying shades and colors are also available to enhance your rock garden, in the garden stores. Based on the size of your garden area and the landscaping plan that you have decided on, you can buy suitable rocks or stones to create a wonderful vision.
How to go about your rock garden
The scheme of the landscape is what will give the basis of placing your rocks around. Make the placement of rocks look natural and at the same time stand out and not get covered by foliage and plants that you place near it. It should blend in with the scenery and not look as though you have put it there to either cover up some area or just to make room for the rock. Look at the rocks in their natural terrain and see how they blend in with the rest of the scenery. Get a balanced and effective look with the placement of the rocks and not a crowded one.
Another aspect that you should pay attention to is the natural look of the layout. If you can take the trouble to bury part of the rock in the soil not only will it look more natural, it will also be firm in its location and not move around because of the weather conditions or people moving it around; this way it will seem that the rock was already there as part of the area. If you have a bigger rock you will have to bury it deeper than a small one. Visualize how a rock looks in its natural surroundings and bury it in the same way in your yard.
To bury a rock you would have to dig a pit that is as big as your rock in the ground which is about 4 to 6 inches deep and place your rock in it. The next step would be to put some soil around it and make it firmly embedded in the ground. This gives it a natural look and also keeps it firmly in place. Do this with all the rocks that you want to place around the yards.

More people are becoming interested in the ways that the use of landscaping and rocks can improve open spaces. Landscape gardening is a catch all term that can be applied just as well to your back yard as it can to extensive parks and estates.
If you plan to start landscape gardening, then there are a few basics that you should be aware of first. Location is all important and swampy land should be avoided if possible. The best ground for landscaping is rising land that has good drainage which sloughs off the surface water. Landscaped gardens do better where there is a breeze circulating the site, there should also be exposure to plenty of sunlight.
If you do plan on getting involved with landscaping and rocks, then once you`ve established what type of land you have, you need to assess its size and shape. It`s no good coming up with some great landscaping ideas and then finding they`re too ambitious for the size of the land you are working on. Use rocks wherever the land is not good for plants and shrubs. There are plants that survive in rock gardens but they must be in a sunny space.
If the rocky part of your garden is on a slope and shady then there are numbers of woodland perennials and ferns that would be great. You can be quite clever in using landscaping and rocks because if you put your rocks on a slope then you won`t have to mow it.
Landscaping and rocks is a lot more successful when you take care over choosing your rocks and stones, as well as your plants. The stone that is native to your area may look the best because that is its natural habitat it will also be inexpensive and easy to obtain. Look for rocks and stones in different shapes and sizes, use a combination of shiny, matte, and pitted surfaces.
Start with the larger rocks in a variety of shapes, look for some that have natural dips or depressions in them, as you will be able to fill them with soil and plant moss or sedum (a ground cover plant with pink or yellow flowers). Whenever you go to get new stone and rocks, take a photograph of what`s already been done, that way you will know the type of rock or stone that will fit in your landscape and what won`t.
When you landscape a garden, you must let the natural conditions of the land guide you. It is no use putting sun loving plants in a shady spot and your rocks and fern in the sunshine. Take care when arranging your stones. If you have stones that are covered in moss then make sure that they are all facing the same way. Whatever characteristics your stones may have make sure that they are all together and facing the same direction. This gives your garden the look of the surrounding landscape it looks as though it belongs there, rather than it looking like a piece of ground where someone has dumped a load of rocks and stones.
If your garden is on a slope, fill in behind each rock as you work your way up the slope. Make sure that the pockets of soil are deeper round the larger stones. Then you can put small shrubs in between. After all the rocks are in place, then let them settle for a few days. Then stand back and take a look around just to make sure that you are happy with the layout before adding any plants. Above all, have fun with landscaping and rocks.
