Landscape Gardening in Sussex – History and Beauty combined

Posted: Aug 10, 2011 |

]]>

Sussex is located in the south-east of England and boasts an array of beautiful public landscape gardens for anybody who loves the outdoors and horticulture to enjoy. Sussex is home to a number of fine examples of landscape gardening and innovative landscape architecture. Landscape gardening in Sussex has survived the test of time and has managed to preserve and maintain its historical and ancient examples of horticulture and landscaping for all to visit and appreciate. Such gardens are indeed offered to the public audience now to appreciate and enjoy. A lot of inspiration and design derives from these fine landscapes for personal project and home design, which is great for maintaining the feel of the English countryside throughout gardens at home or indeed public parks and recreation areas.

Traditional garden design especially those gardens located in regions such as Sussex summon an image of what everyone considers to be the typical English garden. They are generally designed with a well-maintained lawn and flower beds that are abundant with a mix of flora, colourful and vibrant. Traditional landscape gardening often uses a very simple layout, based on those of the historical gardens typically found in the region. The basic layout is the most important factor and usually time is dedicated to design of suitable locations for flowerbeds, lawns and other elements which one may want to implement. Inspiration is often sought from the historic examples of landscape gardening in Sussex which exist to this very day and set the standard for domestic garden options.

Within Sussex lies the Grade I listed Leonardslee which resides in a valley and boasts 7 meandering lakes and comprises of around 200 acres of land. Many types of flowers including Rhododendrons, Magnolias and Azaleas can be found on display here. It was initially opened up to the public by the Sir Edmund Loder in 1907. It is still run and maintained by the same family and of course like many old estates has volunteers who help to preserve the gardens and house. A garden the size of Leonardslee has evolved over centuries. The mainstay of the garden was created in the early years of the 19th century, but generation after generation of the Loder family since around 1889 have continued to preserve design and development of the valley plantings and landscape gardening to form the remarkable splendour that is seen today in Sussex. Many professional garden designers are lucky enough to visit and take inspiration from such areas and as such have great design ideas when it comes to your personal landscape gardening requirements.

The Flag of Zimbabwe

Historic flags have fascinating meaning, including military flags that are displayed on behalf of world countries. One such flag in my opinion is the national flag of Zimbabwe. The flag-design features striking colors that make this flag stand in comparison to other international flags hoisted on flagpoles and such. The colors displayed are black, green, red, white and yellow.

Unlike a more traditional tricolor, the Zimbabwe flag-design features 7 horizontal bands displaying the above-mentioned colors. On the left or hoist part of the national flag, a white triangle is shown. The triangle displays the so-called Zimbabwe Bird. The horizontal stripe that is shown in the center portion of the flag is black. Going upwards, the colors of the following bands are red, yellow and green.

It is not surprising that the colors have specific meaning. For example, the color green is said to symbolize the agriculture and rural areas of the country and yellow the wealth of abundant minerals that are found in the territory. Like many other banners and flags, red symbolizes the blood that was shed during wars of the past (specifically the so called “Chimurenga”). White symbolizes peace.

Zimbabwe is located in the southern part of Africa and land-locked between 2 substantial rivers, the Limpopo and Zambezi. South Africa is borders the republic to the south and Botswana borders the territory to the southwest. Other countries that border the republic are Zambia to the northwest and the country of Mozambique to the east. Interestingly, Zimbabwe’s 3 official languages are English, Ndebele and Shona.

Many in the west and other parts of the world first think of aggression and political unrest when they first think of this beautiful country. Considered a semi-presidential republic, the country has also has a parliamentary system of government. Back in 2005 the senate was re-instated and organized. Ever since the time of independence Robert Mugabe has been the president of the republic. Unfortunately, during elections of the past allegations of so-called “vote-rigging,” and “fraud” surfaced.

Back in the day, the flag of Zimbabwe was designed by Cedric Herbert, a Flight Lieutenant of the then organized Rhodesian Air Force. His design included and includes the so-called “pan-African” colors of green, red, yellow and black. The country has a rich history historical flags. The flag has been used for purposes of display, including the use of flag poles. The use of colors on this African flag (which is available for purchase from all kinds of suppliers throughout the world) is unusually original, if you would ask me.

A Snippet Of History About The Rock Garden

Posted: Mar 01, 2011 |Comments: 0

]]>

Both rock and water were old established garden features way before anyone thought of having lawns, flower beds or borders. Thousands of years ago the first Japanese garden was nothing more than an expanse of white stone chippings with a single Cleyera tree at the centre and the Ancient Persian ‘paradise’ had a long canal and fountains at its heart.

The attraction was very easy to see, these two elements bring a natural feel to any kind of surroundings. Until quite recently however, they were the primarily for the wealthy. Before the latter part of the 19th century, rocks were used to create very bold structures in large estates and it was not until the middle of the 20th century that ponds and fountain construction became simple enough and economical enough for the ordinary gardener.
It has taken a long time, but both rock and water gardening have at last come of age.

There is now enormous interest in all aspects of the water garden. Rock garden plants are grown in great numbers, the variety available these days in both rockeries and rock-free situations is immense. I find it interesting that both these natural elements have several features in common.

They can extend for a few square feet or more than a quarter of an acre, and both provide the opportunity to grow a vast range of plants not found in the ordinary, ever-day garden. The drawbacks that they share are that careful and preparation are required and an appreciable amount of labour and money is required for their creation.

By the latter part of 19th century the age of the large rock garden was all but over. In 1772 the second period of rock gardens began, a garden of rubble and Icelandic basaltic lava was created inside a greenhouse at Chelsea Physic Garden for the cultivation of plants collected from the Swiss Alps. Here the rocks were used as a home for plants rather to provide just an ornamental feature.

This second period got off to a slow start, although rock gardens were created at various sites in Britain and the idea of laying stones to give the appearance of a natural outcrop was developed. Things changed in the 1860′s and the rock garden at last took its place as an important part of the British garden. Rockeries were built at Kew Gardens in 1867 and in Edinburgh in 1871.

In 1870 William Robinson’s Alpine Flowers for English Gardens was published. During this period and into the early 20th century Pulhamite Stone was manufactured in Broxbourne in Hertfordshire and used to create public and private rock gardens throughout the country. The three decades from 1900 to 1939 were the heyday of the rock garden. Reginald Farrer was the leading figure and his ‘My Rock Garden’ book became the first bible on the subject.
Plant hunters scoured the mountains of the world looking for new alpine plants and the rock garden at Wisley was started in 1911. In the years prior to World War II interest in the rock garden declined, only recently has there been a resurgence.

During the 1920′s and 1930′s the idea of growing alpines in non-rock situations took root, this coupled with the appearance of the garden centre in the second half of the 20th century brought about the third period in this history. People began to see the full range of plants which were available along with all sorts of easy and inexpensive ways for cultivating alpines without having to build a rockery.

So, interest switched to the plants and away from the rock structures, and this is the key feature of this third period in the history of rock gardening.

The Japanese have a rich cultural history when it comes to Japanese gardens and teahouses. They are very well known to have preserved their cultural traditions even with progression of culture and technology. Kasuga lantern is one of the Japanese cultural elements that originated in Kasuga shrine in Nara, Japan?s ninth century capital. The interior of this shrine is famous from the dazzling stone and broze lanterns.

The Kasuga lanterns are made out of stone and are usually present in all Japanese tea gardens. In traditional Japanese culture, Kasuga shrine is were the messengers announced important events and messages.

Most Japanese tea gardens have a Kasuga shrine at the entrance. The purpose of having a Kasuga shrine at the entrance is so that the entire shrine can be viewed from one point, a point that is located outside the garden itself. The architecture of most of the gardens is intriguing because of it?s ?hide and seek? style. Japanese tea gardens have dynamic visual components that meant to be discovered by the visitors as they walk through the garden.

Each each planting, and each ornament in a Japanese tea garden is selected and placed with sensitivity to aesthetics and culture of Japan. As you stroll through the garden, watch for the variety of visual compositions and the areas representing various different landscapes.

Two other visually stimulating and intriguing elements of a Japanese garden are Tsukubai foutain and Shihi-Odoshi fountain. Seldom found in a same garden, these two fountains represent rich culture history of Japanese culture. A Tsukubai is a Japanese term that literally translates to ?to crouch or squat?. Individuals visiting the Tea Garden are supposed to ?bend down? and wash their hands and rinse their mouth before they enter the tea house of religious or social ceremonies. This has led to the symbolic representation of Tsukubai fountain is that with a ablutions ritual performed in Baptism.

A Shishi-Odoshi is another fountain that is known for it?s unique cultural history. It originated in Japanese rice farms and was created by the farmers to scare away the deers and other animals that were damaging their agriculture crops. When translated literally, shishi-odoshi stands for ?deer-scarer?. The unique rocking nature of this fountain is what sets it apart from Tsukubai fountain.

There is a lot to Japanese tea gardens. They are amazingly beautiful and culturally rich. Bound to refresh your mind and rejuvenate your soul, a Japanese tea garden is a must-see place for every cultural detective.

Amy C. invites you to add a soothing serenity to your indoors using a Japanese themed bamboo water fountain. To create stunning landscapes and gardens, consider using a warm and natural looking bamboo spout fountain.

Shaping the landscape or landscaping if you prefer signify any activity or process that changes the features of a portion of land in a observable way, such as living elements of flora and fauna, landforms, such as terrain shape and elevation or bodies of water, human elements, such as structures and fences, and abstract factors such as elements to somewhat control the lighting and /or weather conditions.

Landscaping is a highly aesthetic landscape art form that needs a quantity of useful knowledge having to do with plant knowledge, practical applications and operating with various equipments. It could be stated that the earliest landscaper was the Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus, who spent a lot of time pondering the nature and various scopes of landscaping.

Where a lot of early landscapers said that true landscaping alters plants or fields directly, such as in the activities of farming of food crops, Thales rejected this definition of landscaping or shaping the landscape, arguing that any aspect of the physical world affecting someone’s visual perception of an area of land was a correct application of landscaping. Landscape and landscaping are all around us each and everyone of us.

Both Aristotle and Plato had nothing but praise for Thales philosophical modeling related to landscape and landscaping, as well as how his theories can be applied somewhere else in philosophical exploration. G.E. Moore also mentioned Thales in several of his own philosophical works explaining how philosophical inquiry and discourse has led to the truest forms of human progress and understanding.

Then in the 1800s many philosophers debated if visual beauty should even be accepted as a required goal of landscaping or controlling landscape, though by the years 2000 a lot of western philosophical thinkers had grown to reject the idea of an objective aesthetic standard for any type of art, whether architecture or landscaping

Since the later half of the 20th century, landscaping professionals and practitioners have experimented with stunning visual landscape panoramas that since became widely accepted as being a category of landscaping, at least in the occident.

See Rock City: The History of Rock City Gardens
Product Description
Around two hundred million years ago, geological forces produced an expansive grove of rocky caverns and outcroppings atop Lookout Mountain. It was not until the twentieth century, however, that this awe-inspiring citadel evolved into a nationally recognized tourist attraction when Garnet Carter and his wife, Frieda, developed the natural marvel into the Rock City Gardens we know today, an enchanted tribute to fairytales and a breathtaking homage to nature.

Join Rock City expert Tim Hollis as he guides you through the origins of the site’s most fascinating spots, including Fairyland Caverns, See Seven States and Lover’s Leap. Also learn the story behind the world-famous ‘See Rock City’ marketing campaign, as well as the steep challenges the landmark has faced in an often volatile tourism industry. Perhaps the only aspect of Rock City more enchanting than its physical beauty is the fairytale story that surrounds it.
