I’m especially interested in learning greenhouse and gardening techniques that aren’t expensive to maintain after the initial setup costs.

I would be in a colder climate with 500-10,000 dollars to invest. Its a relaxing activity I think I’d enjoy that could pay off as fuel and energy costs continue to rise.

I’m especially interested in websites or books you think might help me out.

Thanks!

How To Take Care Of A Greenhouse

Buying a greenhouse is an investment to the future of your plants. Starting up can take a bit of time and effort, but it will be rewarding to watch and take care of healthy plants each day. With proper maintenance, it will take minimal effort to grow thriving flowers, vegetables, and more.

In areas with a harsh winter, plants will need to be heated at a regulated temperature to keep from freezing. Exotic tropical plants might need year-round heating. Various sources of heating are available for greenhouses to keep plants alive.

Electric heating is safe and poses little risk to the plant-life. It can be expensive, though, and the heating installation must be waterproof to avoid short circuiting. Another problem that some have is in areas that frequently experience power loss during the winter. In just one night, the plants can freeze.

Other greenhouses might run on a gas heating system. This type of a heating system can have its hazards if the gas levels are not monitored. Leaking gas can be a risk, especially in small areas, for people and animals as well as fruits and bushes.

An alternative heating system energy source is solar power. While solar panels can be expensive upfront, they can save a lot of money on energy bills. Solar panels can be placed on a roof or as standalone on the surrounding land. They might not be an efficient source of power in winter months, however, and an alternative energy source might have to be used in addition.

Greenhouses can easily become overheated, especially on very sunny days. The glass captures heat, which is then unable to easily escape. It is important to keep a thermometer inside to monitor the temperature.

Opening a window will lower the temperature of the exterior. It is also possible to block the sun with a shade cloth. Artificial light sources can be shut off to preserve energy and lower temperatures.

For those who do not have as much room or time for maintenance, inexpensive, miniature greenhouses are available. They have room for just a couple of plants. Most of them are portable and made of a light plastic, though some are glass and wood.

Keeping greenhouses clean is the best way to keep them as efficient as possible. The glass should be wiped down regularly with a nontoxic solution. A gentle solution of distilled white vinegar and water is usually efficient for disinfecting the glass without risking plant health and safety.

Pest control can become a problem and may ruin crops. Before a new season, if possible, clear out any plants and fumigate. If you notice any insects, take pictures and take records until they can be identified and taken care of. Some creatures are healthy for the plants and will not need to be removed.

Taking good care of a greenhouse can yield the best crops and most beautiful flowers. Plants can grow equally well all year. With careful maintenance, even plants that are not native to the area can thrive.

One of the leading hobbies for families today is gardening. Home greenhouses have caused a demand for greenhouse equipment and greenhouse supplies designed for the avid gardener. What once was only in commercial nurseries and garden centers are not being used by each custom greenhouse on individual property. Many of the equipment that goes into greenhouses can be expensive and it should be realized that when planning your custom greenhouse.

With the high cost of food and produce these days it is known that many families are turning toward growing their own vegetables and food to maintain sustainability. With the conditions of the toxins added to our foods there is also concern of growing our food organically so that we are free from the toxins.

During the planning stage of your custom greenhouse, the greenhouse builder will describe the types of greenhouse you will need, its position and the equipment needed specifically targeted toward your climate. The types of greenhouses and the supplies needed should all be discussed during the planning phase.

For example, if you live in colder climates, you will want certain types of heating systems and particular materials in the greenhouse to aid your plants in healthy growth year round.

Misting and fog systems are common greenhouse equipment that is used in southern greenhouses and hot climates. Misting systems aid to cool greenhouses with a fine mist that depresses air temperatures when it evaporates. Greenhouse supplies for misting and fogging come in many sizes and costs and your greenhouse builder will also help you decide the proper size and will order it directly through his various sources.

Plants and flowers need to keep their controlled temperature and this is done by the gardener and vents built into the greenhouse. These are usually mechanical and allows the heat to escape through the top and the cooler air to fill the greenhouse at the specified temperature.

Many avid gardeners are using hydroponics to grow their plants. This is with the use of a series of pipes similar to that of an irrigation system but plants are planted directly into the pipes. These are usually made with plastic and uses the liquid within these pipes to feed the plants through the nutrients. The greenhouse builder can help you set up your hydroponic greenhouse, or point you to the one that can.

Custom greenhouses are usually a little larger and are built to the exact specifications of the hobbyist. Lean-to or stand alone greenhouses are good solutions to a more affordable yet workable choice.

Lighting or grow lights also may be considered if your area is colder, short in daylight or need lights 24/7. These lights help with the germination process.

Among other supplies there are options that include plant hangers, shades, shelves, extra doors, benches, and misting wands, etc. Each of these supplies can be tailored towards the gardeners needs and wants.

Short growing seasons are extended due to the greenhouse and it’s unique features in equipment and supplies. Vegetables and flowers can be harvested year round once controlled by the gardener and his greenhouse.

Small or mini-greenhouse kits can be bought in various places throughout the United States and over-seas and they are a great way to get started with your greenhouse. The greenhouse builder will know where to order these smaller kits and can help you determine if they will hold up in bad weather.

Anyone can grow plants, but to grow plants well takes a little knowledge, skill and the right equipment. Each city and on line resources offer excellent information on starting a greenhouse garden. A greenhouse creates the perfect atmosphere for plants to flourish; so many people are building greenhouses on their properties, and stocking them with the right greenhouse supplies.

One last type of greenhouse structure to consider is the luxury greenhouse. These are very large solariums and greenrooms, some with many stories and swimming pools, water fountains and foliage resembling that of a vacation hideaway. Again, ask your greenhouse builder for more information on building a luxury greenhouse and planning your custom greenhouse.

Greenhouse Construction of Your Custom Greenhouse

If you’re thinking about purchasing or constructing a custom made greenhouse there are a few basic measures to take into account for the greenhouse construction costs.

First and foremost, greenhouse construction is a particular type of building. You must never hire a builder that has not had ample experience in this type of construction. Greenhouse construction is expensive and must be constructed by greenhouse craftsmen.

Some of the problems that arise when constructing a greenhouse fall upon the contractors expertise in knowledge of scheduling, materials and procedures. There are specific tools, clips, nuts, bolts and working with glass or polycarbonate is a learned skill. These materials are unique to the manufacturer as well as the industry as a whole. If you were to hire a local builder this would be to save money and cutting corners is a grave loss in the end.

Next, it is important the builder knows the ins and outs of the manufacturing process. The production of a greenhouse is important in planning your custom greenhouse. From the style, the location the purpose and the additions such as doors, vents, air flow, air conditioners, misters or heating units all are needed knowledge of the greenhouse builder. The tools and parts are exclusive to the greenhouse craftsman. And just like any art form, you will not want any room for error.

Third, constructing a greenhouse demands team performance with the manufacturer as well as the builders. After you have your greenhouse placement and have discussed the desires, sizes and models with the greenhouse builder, ordering and delivery of the parts must have a timely and smooth scheduling. A nightmare can occur if a shoddy builder ordered the elements from a kit, or a kit from overseas. With one missing part the construction can be delayed or parts may be faulty or missing. Again, this would be a simple mistake but a costly mistake. The complete method will be delayed and extra charges would arise from that too.

Last, all phases of the building process are important steps from start to end. From the planning with the builder, to the drawings, quotes, to manufacturing, you will want to be a part of the planning. A local contractor will have no experience of where to set a vent, or where doors need to be placed or how many misting units need to go into planning a greenhouse. The direction of the sun, the wind, are all factors that builders and manufacturers work together on simultaneously. The builder and manufacturer, the architects and engineers are all comfortable in the process and working with one another prior to building the custom greenhouse.

These are just a few basic considerations in planning your custom greenhouse and your builder should know enough to talk to you about the details involved. Building a greenhouse is a specialty for enjoyment for years to come.

Of all of the varied styles of greenhouses, the Victorian Greenhouse seems to be one of the most sought after designs in greenhouse construction.

The term Victorian Greenhouse comes from the Victorian Style of architecture. This developed during the reign of Queen Victoria and lasted from 1807 through 1901. This was a long period of prosperity for the British people and the industrial growth was high. It also allowed the middle class to develop and was a period of positive influence.

The Victorian architecture was brought about during the Gothic revival period and in 1951, the first World’s Fair was introduced. This was where the greatest industrial innovations were networked and at the central part of the fair was a incredible glass building, massive in size at approximately 990,000 square feet, and unlike any design or structure witnessed before this time. This was the Crystal Palace

and housed 14,000 exhibitors. This was the first of what is known today as a prototype for our Victorian Greenhouse.

Greenhouse construction include many shapes, styles and designs. These would be Quonset, Tri-Penta, dome, Gothic arch, slant-side, A-frame, gable roof, straight side, curved side and slant sided lean-to greenhouses. Among the positive styles of these would also include the Victorian Greenhouse. It has straight sides but also curved eaves and vents allowing for better air flow. It is also one of the most beautiful styles and is an asset to any backyard or span of land.

There are beautiful styles in greenhouses, but functionality are also important. With the new materials available such as polycarbonate, the Dome, Gothic, Victorian, Quonset, curved-side lean-to and the Tri-Penta support these more flexible coverings. The A-frame, gable roof, slant, straight sided lean-to greenhouses work better with glass construction.

Some styles are easier to heat and cool, like the Victorian, and Quonset. The dome or A-frame is not as efficient in heating and cooling. The A-frame is unusual in its growing area, or head area and may seem awkward to work in. The Victorian seems to fit all criteria for efficient cooling and heating with the roof of an A-frame and the curved eaves allowing air flow and circulation for efficiency. The vents also aid in quality air control.

The Victorian Greenhouse is a perfect shape for greenhouse construction. It is workable, efficient, stylish and is popular in the Northern and the Southern climates. The structure (when custom built) will last for many years down the road. There is no better greenhouse than a Victorian Greenhouse.
