Every year millions of people all over the world take on a kitchen remodel. Sometimes this renovation is partial, but usually it is a total refit. When you are thinking about remodelling your kitchen, there are two main things that you should keep in mind. The first is functionality, after all you have to be able to cook there and the second is lighting.

Lighting is important for various reasons, but it does depend on what you use your kitchen for. You will need good lighting for cooking at all times of the day; you might need softer lighting for eating and you may like soft down lighting just so that you can find a biscuit at night. This can be achieved with a dimmer, but that would be to miss out on an opportunity of developing a good lighting system.

One of the problems is that there is so much choice when it comes to choosing light fixtures and fittings, light bulbs and accessories. You probably already have an idea of what you want having seen kitchens in your friends’ houses and in adverts. However, despite the fact that you may have pre-established ideas, it is worth getting hold of a couple of home improvement magazines and manufacturers’ brochures.

The best place to begin is the ceiling. If you eat or talk in the kitchen, you will probably want a suspended light above the table concerned. If you have a fairly large kitchen, you might want to have spotlights on the ceiling pointing to the main areas where you prepare food.

Down lights fixed above the work counter are very useful and quite atmospheric. They are particularly helpful above areas that you use often for snacks or drinks in the evenings – it saves switching the main light on.

If you live in a hot locale and you want a fan, you could get a ceiling fan that has built-in lighting. Normally these fans have four lights and there is a pull-cord control in order to select no lights, two lights or four lights. This is independent of the fan’s speed control.

A variation on this theme is a chandelier, but obviously you will need a pretty high ceiling to accommodate it. Wall lighting is another popular alternative. If you hold intimate dinner parties in the kitchen, wall sconces are a means of creating a romantic and nostalgic atmosphere. These sconces can hold electric lights or just candles, which are very effective at generating an atmosphere.

It is best if you incorporate planning your kitchen’s lighting into the design procedure as early as possible. It actually is that important to get it right. If you do not live alone, organize a brain-storming session with the people who share your house to see if they have other suggestions about how the kitchen should be used.

Some people might prefer to make it a more traditional area, where people sit and talk and eat together; others may be very happy to eat in front of the TV or in their bedrooms. All of these considerations can have an effect on the lighting you will need in your kitchen.

Solar-Powered Lighting

Mankind needs light. We humans are reliant on light unlike some other species. Our whole world existed only in the day light for millions of years. We woke up with the sunlight and went to bed when the sun went down. Afterward, we learned to produce our own light, but we were not totally successful at it until we commenced using electricity to make light.

This has worked well for almost a hundred years, but now we know that the main fuel used to produce our electricity, namely oil, is becoming too complicated to obtain and more and more wars are being fought to ensure the West’s supply of oil.

Not only that, but greater and greater risks are being taken by oil companies, which has lead to more and more catastrophes like that of the deep sea rig off Louisiana in the USA.

Consequently, the time has come, some even say that it is long overdue, that we depend on a different source of power and less on oil. The easiest and least risky way to produce electricity at the moment seems to be solar power. The technology has been with us for decades, but it was not practical for households to use it because it was too expensive, but that is no longer the case.

The ability to use solar power to produce electricity for our lighting and indeed all our requirements is there, already at hand. The only problem is that there are many oil baron billionaires who do not see this advancement as being in their interest. And they are right, in a way, it is not in their selfish interest to decrease our dependence on oil, but it is in the planet’s and its population’s interest. That is mankind’s predicament at this moment.

Solar panels can be utilized to make electricity for immediate use either inside or outside the home and the surplus generated can either be stored in batteries or fed back into the electric grid for which you will be remunerated (and remunerated at a very high rate, in some countries).

If you are not ready to come off the grid just quite yet, you could still use solar panels to run some of your external lights. In deed, there is a broad choice of outdoor lighting that provides its own power.

These external lights use mini solar panels, which the manufacturer has built in to the casing of the light to create power from the sunlight during daylight hours and then stores it in internal batteries to be utilized later.

These lamps also have a capacity to run the light on battery power from dusk until dawn. The solar unit determines whether to charge the batteries or supply light by the intensity of the ambient light. This solar power set up is perfect for exterior security lighting and accent lighting in the garden. They are just the thing for lighting up the fish pond or the drive too.

Solar powered external lighting has come a long way and it is well worth you finding out more, if you would like to decrease your dependence on electricity produced by oil from the grid.

A Mini Sun In A Box?

How do you feel in the winter when light levels are reduced? Do you become fed-up, lethargic or even depressed? This experience is quite widely documented and has the acronym of SADS. SADS is or can be pretty serious, but there are almost certainly many many more people who just feel a ‘bit down’ when the sunlight dims. Artificial bright light was invented to help these people.

If, after you have been in the office or wherever you work inside for a few hours, you become tired or listless, it is possible that you are suffering from reduced light levels, so some people say. Whether you accept as true that bright light can help sluggishness or not, SADS is a fact and so it is feasible that increased bright light levels might help.

The artificial bright light box produces very bright light, typically between 5,000 and 10,000 lux according to their advertisements. These figures will not mean much to most people, so I have compiled a short list of comparison lux levels below.

1 lux = Full moon overhead in the tropics 50 lux = Family living room 100 lux = Very dark overcast day 320-500 lux = Office lighting 400 lux = Sunrise or sunset on a clear day. 1,000 lux = Overcast day 10,000-25,000 lux = Full daylight (not direct sun) 32,000-130,000 lux = Direct sunlight

It is definitely true that most people feel happier when the sun is shining and not many people prefer winter over summer, but whether you can get sunlight out of a box or not is another question. These bright light boxes cost about $200 and up, but then you have to factor in the running costs. The electricity bill for running a mini sun must be quite horrific.

If your place of work is a little dark, it would be a good idea to augment the light levels. Sometimes it can be quite easy to increase the levels of natural light simply by removing any superfluous net curtains and by installing longer curtain rods so that the curtains can be drawn right back out of the way of the window enabling the maximum of light to enter your room.

If this is still not enough, you could fit some wall sconces around areas where you work the most. Wall lights can supply light exactly where you want it and usually use quite small, low-powered bulbs. A more direct way to light up your work is by the use of a desk lamp.

If it is a question of needing more light to read by, you could invest in a standard floor lamp. Standard floor lamps are typically about five feet high with a shade. The shade is useful, because it directs light up onto the ceiling, if the shade is open topped, and down onto your book or shoulders. There are other types of standard floor lamp which have a glass or clear cover over the bulb. These will cast more light around the room and will boost general visibility.

Not being able to see properly can easily cause a headache and frequent headaches can be depressing, but before I rush out to buy a ‘bright light box’, I will take the actions outlined above and have my eyesight checked by an optician.

How To Create A Wild Flower Garden

Have you ever wanted a wild flower garden? A wild flower garden is not just a garden that has turned wild, in fact it is quite the opposite. A garden that has gone wild usually looks a bit of a mess, whereas a wild flower has to have a closely controlled environment.

Garden flowers have been hardened, so to speak. They have been cultivated and cross-bred so that they can put up with not being taken care of all that well by the typical gardener who does not know a great deal about gardening, although there are some very fragile garden plants too. However, wild flowers have never had this treatment, they grow only where the circumstances are perfect or they do not grow at all. It is virtually impossible to grow wild flowers where they would not naturally occur.

This is why many people’s attempts at making a wild flower garden fail so miserably – they have expected the wild flowers to ‘just grow wild’ without having made the correct environment. Therefore, if you decide to create a wild flower garden, you will first have to determine what sort of flowers you want to grow.

Do you fancy meadow flowers, woodland flowers, hedgerow flowers, marsh or riverside flowers? You can combine some of these styles, of course. You could merge meadow and hedgerow varieties, if you plant a hedge border around your garden.

After you have decided on which varieties of flowers you want to or can grow, you need to set about manufacturing the correct environment. One of the prettiest wild flower gardens, if your climate is right, is an orchid garden. In Thailand, a lot of the orchids grow on the bark of live or fallen trees, so we have a few uprooted tree stumps in shaded areas of the garden with dozens of wild orchids growing on them.

The simplest wild flower garden for most people to create would be waterside, meadow and hedgerow combined. Therefore, first you will have to make a suitable pond and start growing wild hedges around your perimeters. Then sow a coarse grass on the rest of the soil. The pond can have a brick border, but at least one edge should be muddy – just wet mud leading into a shallow edge of the water.

When these micro environments are ready, but not before, you can go out and forage for plants from like environments to transplant into your wild flower garden. One note of caution here: please ensure that the flowers that you want to collect are not protected before you uproot them and never strip an area of a species. If there are only one or two plants of a variety, do not take them.

Remember that your wild flowers are not that resilient, so you ought to have prepared their new home before you went foraging and you must replant them as soon as you get home. Try not to leave it until the next day.

It is preferable to collect flowers just after they have flowered and are starting to die back. When you have discovered a flower that you want, carefully dig it up with a trowel and include a good sized slab of soil with its roots. You can put this into a plastic bag and put this in a basket. It is a good suggestion to take few photos of the flower in its original environment, so that you can do a bit of tweaking when you get back. It will also help you remember what that flower likes to live with when you go out collecting for your wild flower garden next time

Every knitter is looking for new ways to increase their speed, from beginners to very advanced knitters. The good news is that there are a few simple tricks that can drastically improve your knitting speed that most people don’t know about. Most knitters accomplish around 30 stitches per minute, but you can double that number with these techniques and finish your projects in half the time!

The first and most important step to take is to get yourself a pair of metal knitting needles. The Addi Turbo needles are considered the highest quality needles in the industry. These needles are nickel plated with brass tips, so they glide very easily which is very important for speed. For lace projects, check out the Addi Lace needles. These are made of brass with sharp tips for delicate work.

Metallic needles will generally give you much more speed than bamboo, plastic, or acrylic. Both brands will speed up your knitting, as the stitches will slide really easily from one needle to the other. You can either purchase these needles separately, or buy an interchangeable set which includes many different needle sizes. With these “click sets,” you will always have the right needle size ready to go for your next project!

Learning a new style of knitting can really improve your speed. Continental and English are the two major styles of knitting. In English, the yarn is held in the right hand and thrown over to create a new stitch. I find the Continental style a lot quicker: the yarn is held in the left hand and picked at by the right needle. If you’re interested in learning this new style, search “Continental Knitting” on youtube.com.

Holding yourself correctly is the next step. When knitting, you should keep your shoulders, elbows, and wrists very relaxed. Try to reduce your hand and finger movements as much as possible. You only want to perform just enough movement to accomplish the stitch. Remember to take frequent breaks from knitting to stretch for optimal comfort and health.

Knitting is generally faster than purling in any method, so try to knit as much as possible. If you’re working on a piece in stockinette stitch that is supposed to be a tube, I would recommend knitting it in the round so you just have to purl every stitch, rather than knitting it flat and sewing it up later. Try working on smaller projects if you really want to see immediate results. Knit hats, fingerless gloves, and children’s clothing if you need to get a project done quickly.

If you need to produce items quicker than your hands will let you, consider investing in a knitting machine. Addi carries two fantastic machines: The Addi Express knitting machine for small projects, and the Addi Express king size machine for larger projects. If you sell knitted items, have arthritis, or just want to design and own knit items quickly, these two products are great to check out.

With hand knitting, it’s important to develop a rhythm in your knitting. This is really just a matter of repetition. Once you get the tension and the motion of your stitches down, it is fairly easy to create a steady tempo for your knitting. Knitting with Addi Turbo or Addi Lace knitting needles can drastically improve your knitting experience and help you get into a rhythm. The more you practice, the more you will master whatever knitting style you choose and enjoy your knitted projects without delay!

Six Useful Suggestions For Saving Money

When times are difficult, like they have become lately, it is time to cut costs. This is not a popular move, but to be honest, it need not be such a problem as you might imagine. The biggest single bill for most households is the energy bill and in especially the electric bill. If you do not use electricity to cook or heat your house, then the next greatest contributer to your bill is almost certainly lighting.

Anyway, here are six suggestions for reducing your household expenses.

1] Plan your menu before you go shopping. If you are able to, plan your meals for the entire week so that you can use bits and pieces from one day’s meals in the next day’s. It is also easier and cheaper to buy in bulk, which will also save you travelling costs. Use coupons were you can. It is an obvious idea, but one that a lot of people overlook as they read their magazines.

2] Replace all your traditional, incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL). These bulbs use a low quantity of energy, but still put out a high amount of light. It is a good idea to check for the ‘Energy Star’ rating before you buy in order to ensure that you are getting a high quality product.

3] Instead of using all the lighting in a room, try to illuminate only what you have to. If you are working at your desk, switch off all the other lighting except a desk top lamp and possibly a standard floor lamp. It is surprising how far light travels in a dark room. The light from two lamps such as these will be ample to see your way around too.

4] Buy stocks of light bulbs by the score. They will last a long time, but the CFL bulbs will not deteriorate, so as the price rises with inflation, you will have a stock at the old price. If you can, buy them online, because an online retailer has fewer expenses, which can translate into savings of as much as 70%. Online auctions are also a good idea, you may be able to pick up bankrupt stock.

5] Cook your own meals and make your own food for work. Take home-produced sandwiches or salads. A flask of tea or coffee will supply up to $25 of Starbucks’ substitute coffee drinks

6] Put as many of your lights and appliances on timers or photosensitive switches. If you use passive infra red sensors to activate lights to deter intruders in your garden, you could be using up more electricity than you need to during the day. If you buy flood lights with photosensitive switches, then they will deactivate the lights during daylight when they are pretty useless anyway.

If you have a pond and pond lights, you can also use similar devices to turn your pond lights and pond fountain off during the night..

None of these measures should have a negative effect on your lifestyle, although they will save you money.

The main Japanese influences on western interior design for most people are Zen and Feng Shui, so we will take a short look at them below.

Zen Interior Design

If you would like to bring some features of Zen into your home, the interior design will have to be minimalistic, serene and tranquil. Nature will be an essential part of generating that atmosphere.

Minimalism means simple, simple colours, nothing loud. Furniture and ornaments ought to be kept to a minimum too.

People relate Zen with Japan, but in fact it is Chinese in origin. Zen is a form of Buddhism, so it is not really a style, but a life style, a state of being, a form of religion. Zen incorporates meditation in order to gain enlightenment.

Therefore, in order to create aspects of what we call Zen into your interior design, you will have to take all unnecessary articles out of your room and paint with plain colours that will not distract your mind. This is more difficult to accomplish than you might imagine, but do your best to picture what a monk’s cubicle would be like to live in.

It is probably sensible to make over only one room in your house in what we call a Zen style, because most Westerners would find it hard to live without all their ‘stuff’.

No knick-knacks, very little furniture and bland colours are the order of the day. So, it would be best to start by taking everything out of the room, because it is easier to put a few items back than to take a lot out. Then paint the walls white or off-white, say ‘smoke white’ – a very pale shade of gray.

An inspiring photograph with a Zen proverb could go on a wall. Maybe something by Matsuo Basho like: ‘Do not seek to walk in the footsteps of the wise men of old, seek what they sought’.

Feng Shui Interior Design

‘Feng Shui’ is usually translated into English as ‘Wind and Water’ and it is the art of arranging objects to achieve harmony. Once again, Feng Shui originated in China, not Japan.

The real Feng Shui disciple uses the art not only for interior design but also to choose a house and a burial plot. Devotees believe that Feng Shui has an effect on health, prosperity and personal relationships.

Early Chinese Feng Shui employed astronomy to discover the equilibrium between man and the universe and Feng Shui measuring devices have been found in tombs going back to 278 BC

Modern Feng Shui seeks to locate places with good ‘Qi’ (pronounced ‘Chi’). These areas are deemed to be good for humans to live in, others should not be settled and left as nature intended.

Qi means ‘air’ and is used to describe the flow of energy, perhaps founded on solar energy. It is the balance between two entities and is the principal behind Feng Shui. The opposites in this equilibrium are the ‘Ying’ and the ‘Yang’.

Feng Shui was almost unheard of in the West until Richard Nixon went to China in 1972. Unfortunately, it has been re-invented in the West and now has been mixed up with magic and mysticism in the USA

Gardening Is Easy When You Follow This Advice

Gardening can be a rewarding pastime and can bring many benefits. Whether you grow flowers or vegetables, there is just something about growing plants and caring for them that is so rewarding. This article can lend you a helping hand and give you important pointers about gardening and growing things.

One should build a border with a fence around their garden before they even start planting their garden. Having something in place to keep out animals before the garden has even started growing will make sure ones plants are safe from the moment they start growing and can reach their maximum size. Grow interesting foliage plants for a showstopping display. Look for plants with unusual and colorful foliage to add year round interest to your garden. Many people tend to focus mainly on flowering plants, not realizing that the blooming season is sometimes quite limited. The most beautiful flowering plants can often have boring foliage, meaning that when the flowers are finished blooming, you are left with quite a dull garden. Add interest with plants grown purely for their foliage. Interesting varieties include hosta, coleus, canna, euphorbia and fatsia.

Keep slugs out of your tender plants. Cut the bottom 2 inches off a plastic soda bottle to make a ‘saucer’. Dig a little hole near to any tender plants and bury the saucer with about 1/4 inch left above ground. Fill it with beer, and leave it overnight The slugs will be attracted to the sugar in the beer and will make their way in, never to get out again! When you plant your garden, make sure that it has a good variety of herbs. Herbs are some of the easiest plants to grow, and can be used in any number of dishes. Herbs take up little space and are the perfect investment in your garden, giving you an excellent return for the time and money spent. You should get a heat lamp to warm your plants during the winter months if you are growing an indoor garden. Plants need a constant temperature around 65 degrees. It can be expensive to keep a home or apartment at that constant temperature. A heat lamp is a cheap and inexpensive way to give the plants the heat they need to grow.

A great tip to consider in regards to gardening is to invest in high quality tools instead of cheaper ones. This is important because you never want to have to end a day or waste time going to the store if you break a shovel or find that your hose has a leak in it. You need to prune your rose bushes on a regular basis. Pruning a bush helps to increase its circulation, which will help it to be healthier. You should use pruners when pruning a rose bush as they are quick, easy and do not cause damage to the bush when they are used. They are typically cheap and affordable.

It is not necessary to consider gardening to be a hobby that is only enjoyed by old people and women. It is now the 21st century and that means that even if you are a 20 year old guy then you can participate in any kinds of hobbies that you enjoy.

As you read earlier in the article, gardening has a diverse set of benefits that make it a great hobby, from improving property value to putting delicious and healthy food on your table. If this sounds like a good way to spend your time, apply the tips from this article and start your own garden!

One of the most crucial things to obtain in virtually any brand new vegetable garden is a very good storage shed, and what better way to obtain one than to construct your own working with some wonderful wooden shed plans

How To Create A New Garden

The issue when you are thinking about creating a garden is: do you have a choice of where to put it. For example, you may have a very large garden or you may be looking for an allotment from the local council. However, if you do not have a choice, then you will have to decide on the kind of flowers you want for your garden according to its position and condition.

If, however, you are lucky enough to have a choice, then the chief consideration is the sun. In fact, even more significant that that is what kind of plants you want to grow. If you want flowers that like the sun or if you like plants that cannot bear it, then the location of the garden is vital.

In the northern hemisphere, the majority of gardeners would pick a south-facing garden, if they had the choice, but not everyone. Some gardeners are interested in marsh plants or woodland plants, for instance. If you do make the majority choice and go for a south-facing garden, then your planting beds should run from north to south, because that way they will receive maximum exposure to the sun’s rays.

If, however, you cannot get a south-facing garden, but you can acquire one facing southeast, then your flower beds should run north-west to south-east for the maximum exposure to the sun. Other directions can be worked out in a similar fashion.

The idea, whichever way your garden is facing, is to get the sun shining as near to 50% on each side of the plants as possible. The only real way of gaining success in this question is by having a south-facing garden in the northern hemisphere or a north-facing garden in the southern hemisphere.

When you have worked out the best place to put your garden, or which way it is facing, you should start planning it. This can best be done on graph paper. The first step is to draw a scale diagram of your garden. Once you have done that, you should prepare the ground by either clearing it of rubbish or clearing the scrub.

If your garden has decent turf, plan on your graph paper where you want your flower beds to be and draw them in. Then cut these parts out of your garden.

Depending how much space you have set apart for plants, you can now either dig it over or rotovate it. Whichever means you decide on, do it to the best of your ability, because once you have flowers and bushes in your garden, you will not find it so easy again. Dig plenty of manure into the soil while you are doing it.

Now that you have a proper environment for your future plants, you can go about choosing your plants. This has to be done with the orientation of your garden in mind, if you want to make the most of the plot that you have available to you.

If you want to moderate a south-facing garden, this can easily be done by adding trees and bushes to provide shade, but it is not easy to heat up a cold north-facing garden.

Stairlift battery replacement can be very pricey especially if you own a advanced straight or curved Stairlift that requisite a special power pack replacement battery

Unlike the older formal Stair lifts that require the standard Lead Acid Batteries modern Stairlifts carry a power pack battery specifically designed for that Chairlift and can only be purchased from the Stair lift supplier manufacturer

Replacing the power pack batteries on modern Curved Chairlifts such as the Bison / Acorn 80 Stairlift will not remedy the fault condition. The Bison / Acorn 80 curved stairlift will require reprogramming by a qualified trained engineer after the battery replacement procedure

We highly advocate modern straight and curved Stairlifts are insured as the costs of battery renewal can run into hundreds of pounds £150-199 is a good ballpark figure to keep in heed

Stairlift producers are now making it difficult for DIY botch jobs or small suppliers who are not trade partners with the associated manufactures to obtain replacement spare parts such as batteries etc.

The only alternative for the owner is to pay the hefty price tag for what seems like a simple job of renewing a Stairlift battery

Insurance cover may help in regaining the money of the battery renewal but does not help in seeking a local supplier who is an authorised company for the Stairlift manufacturer. Hence one should be impertinent to take out the all-inclusive warranty offered by the supplier company

If you own a standard straight or curved Stair lift produced before 2009 then good chance your Chairlift incorporates the original lead acid batteries that can be bought from local electrical supplier retail store or companies who stock and sell car batteries

For the average person who has some type of engineering background the task of replacing the Stairlift batteries should be straight forward and carrying out DIY installation of the batteries will reduce the costs dramatically
