How to Grow an Herb Garden

How to grow beautiful culinary herbs

You don’t have to be a chef or have a green thumb to grow an herb garden. Culinary herbs are extremely easy to grow. Once they get going, they add fragrance, texture and color to just about any garden or space. Harvest your culinary herbs to make everything from herbal teas, vinegars and flavorful recipes.

Herbs don’t require much space to grow. You can plant them in beds in a garden or you can grow them in a small container. Combining herbs can create a beautiful effect. Your bed or container is your canvas – and what you plant there can grow into a beautiful masterpiece.

Plenty of sun
Herbs love plenty of sunlight. When choosing a location for your herbs, look for an outdoor area or window that gets 5-7 hours of direct sunlight each day.

Well-drained soil
Whether you are planting your herbs in containers or a garden, start by testing your soil for nutrients and pH. It may be necessary to adjust your soil pH to the near-neutral pH of 6-7 that herbs grow best in. You will also want to add a layer of organic compost and minerals to the soil prior to planting.

Adequate water
Herbs like well-drained soil, but well drained soil needs to be watered more frequently. Don’t just water on a whim. Stick your finger down into your soil approximately 1″ to 1-1/2″. There is no need to water unless your soil feels almost dry to the touch.

Three rules of thumb for fertilizing your herbs
Fertilizer is often referred to as “plant food.” The most important thing to remember when feeding your herbs – use products that are organic. Remember, you are going to be consuming what you grow. If you don’t want to consume chemicals, don’t use them on your herbs.

Second rule of thumb – feed your herbs a balanced diet.
Fertilizer or “plant food” provides your herbs with the major elements they need to grow and thrive – nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Your plants also need minor elements called micronutrients, which contain the minor elements required by your plants to grow.

Finally.
Feed your plants through their leaves (foliar feeding). Foliar feeding is 100-500% more effective than root feeding and offers quicker results. Look for organic foliar fertilizers and micronutrients. Spray all the leaves of your herbs every 1-4 weeks.

Harvesting and storage
Once your herbs are established it is important to cut them back on a regular basis. Never harvest more than 1/3 of each individual herb plant. The best time to harvest your herbs is in the morning, when the oils are still readily available in their leaves. Harvest your herbs before they flower. This will prevent them from putting forth seed and will encourage more vigorous green growth.

You can use your herbs right away, refrigerate them or put them in a plastic freezer bag and freeze them up to 6 months.

Whatever you do, enjoy growing your culinary herbs.
You will feel like a gourmet, each time you wander into your garden to clip a few herbs for your culinary productions. Even if you don’t cook much, snip a bit of fresh mint from your herb garden to transform a simple glass of ice tea into the most delectable treat. Or garnish a fruit plate, fresh vegetables and salads with your fresh herbs. Using them is as easy as growing them.

I am a gardener who enjoys growing vegetables, herbs and flowers. I believe in using organic methods and products when gardening.

The Modern Japanese Garden

The Modern Japanese Garden
Price: $24.39
The Modern Japanese Garden
Product Description
Japanese garden design, know to the West primarily in its traditional form, has undergone striking developments over the last decade. The Modern Japanese Garden is the first book to survey these contemporary Japanese gardens, presenting the designs in a way that is relevant to readers and their homes, whether it is in the East or West. Most of the locations have never been seen before in the West. In addition to important public gardens (such as that of the Tokyu Hotel Cerulean Tower, Shibuya) there are examples of some of the best modern domestic gardens. Among the more experimental gardens featured are a water garden with glass rocks; a mountain garden with flashing kinetic rods; a house with a vegetable roof garden; a rock plaza that pumps out mist; and a rock garden built inside a large inclined tube.
With chapters exploring such themes as the influence on contemporary design of traditional Japanese cultural ideas, the miniaturization of landscape, sculpture, and texture, and the use by some garden designers of far more planting than was previously found in Japanese garden design, this inspirational book is required reading for all garden enthusiasts, especially those living in urban areas, as well as garden and landscape designers, and architects.

I have a small garden in my back yard, I live in MI, and we probably want to do sunflowers and cosmos and we are trying to find a vegetable that will grow well. We have tried carrots and corn and they don’t seem to grow well and we don’t want to do cucumbers. Also any other general tips for gardening?? Thanks!!
We tried lettuce too and that didn’t turn out to well either!!

As the number of houses in cities continue to rise, planting a garden of your own has become increasingly difficult. This challenge is even greater than just a lack of space; the soil around most homes is usually quite poor and not a good choice for growing anything other than grass or weeds.

All of this is changing thanks to new technological systems that have been created for hydroponic gardening. You can now grow vegetation right in your own home. The hydroponics way of gardening has made how we use water to direct plant and vegetable growth much more effective and efficient. Now, anyone can create their own home hydroponics garden at their own convenience.

As many environmentalists pursue the possibility of bringing back the “green culture” to cities today, the creation of homemade hydroponics systems is certainly a timely issue to consider for many homeowners in the city. A couple of great advantages to think about that you will gain from a hydroponic garden is that the air in your home will be purer and you will never be without homegrown veggies again.

You will want to understand the different choices that are available to you when you start your hydroponic garden. A number of hydroponic garden systems are available from which to select. Some of these are NFT, drip, wick, ebb and flow, and water culture systems. Water culture is a very effective hydroponic system and a popular choice of many people.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on your system; you can start with some basic materials that you can find around the home. There are some special nutrients that you will need when you are growing plants using a hydroponic system. A lot of hydroponic gardens for home use have Styrofoam for their base so vegetation can float right on the water’s surface. With the use of an air pump to supply the air, the basin used to hold the nutrients for the plants is then able to handle distribution of the minerals and nutrients towards the plants.

Anyone who has a desire to enjoy cleaner air in their home, keep themselves healthy and be environmentally friendly should take a good look at home hydroponics systems.

Using a hydroponics grow tent will provide your plants with the perfect conditions to flourish. Learn more about what you need to get started with hydroponic gardening at the Hydroponic Gardening site.

How To Lay Out Bathroom In A Basement ?

Less number of bathrooms in a house is one of the major complaints homeowners have. Too few bathrooms in accommodations are generally the reasons for fights and quarrels among the home members. Moreover, this can lead to people being late and leaving the house in a bad mood.

Adding a bathroom in your basement can however solve this problem. So this time, when you are opting to remodel your house, make sure you go for adding bathroom in the basement. This will add value to your house and reduce the morning arguments.

A basement bathroom does not need much of remodeling and can be built by homeowner who does not have any plumbing knowledge. It is economical, because the plumbing line is joined to the existing piping.

We should choose suitable place in the basement for the bathroom. It should be under the previous bathroom located on the ground floor. This would save a lot of plumbing material and money in turn. This will also minimize the problem of leveling of the pipe lines.

Bathroom walls may be made of wood, steel studs. To ward off the effect of bathroom moisture and basement dampness, moisture proof drywall is recommended.

All the needed fixtures and faucets like sink, commode taps, shower head, pipes etc should be proper specifications and quality for longer life of the bathroom.

If the bathroom is below the level of the sewage pipes, ensure you install a sewer ejector system. This is the only way to get waste water up and out of the basement. Install your new fixtures and run all associated piping.

Call in a plumber for final connections. Since all the piping is done, plumber will do the connections in less time and money. Now, end up your installation with laying floor tile, painting the walls and applying any other desired finishes. In order, to give the bathroom a practical look; make provisions for a bathtub as well.

Garden furniture can complement any outdoor garden or patio setting where you have made flowers and or plant the focal point of the yard. Choosing the right set is crucial to making the backyard a haven for entertaining or simply relaxing after a long day at work or basking in the hot sun.

There are several types and styles of garden furniture to choose from for your backyard, depending on your budget restrictions, your preference in materials and how you would like to match the decor with the flowers and other items in your backyard. For example, if you have a fountain in your garden, you would probably want to go with garden furniture that was more light an airy rather than something heavy or bulky.

One of the most economical garden furniture is the wicker material. It is durable to a point and some of it is waterproof, you would have to check the label. If it is not waterproof, you would have to bring it in during rain storms. Wicker outdoor garden furniture can look very nice in a garden setting of flowers or a screened in porch were there are many hanging baskets of flowers and potted plants with vine type leaves. They come in benches, large wing-backed chairs, tables and even swings.

A very durable material is the metal or iron type that will stand up to all weather so there is no need to bring them in when the season is over or when it snows or rains. This metal garden furniture comes in mostly benches, chairs and tables. The tables can be small, like end tables or coffee tables or large like an umbrella table. And one thing about the metal material is that very intricate detail can be carved into them making them very ornate and beautiful. However, they are mostly black or gray in color.

Garden furniture made of a metal piping, usually aluminum comes in a variety of colors such as garden green or cream and usually have the large umbrella table, regular size chairs, unlike the large wicker ones, and can also have a swing or slider with padding or an awning to protect against the sun. This style seems to be the most popular and can be matched with most flower and garden decor.

Hand carved wooden garden furniture is another style that is available in selected areas because it is usually hand made and specially ordered. Your local garden center would be able to tell you where you can get in touch with someone who carves handmade wooden garden furniture. Some wood workers prefer a certain type of wood over others but you can probably find what you are looking for if you shop around a little.

In addition to the hand carved wooden garden furniture, there are those that are environmentally friendly and use actual trees and branches to put together a unique looking set of garden furniture without the nails and glue. These are usually larger pieces and also need to be specially ordered.

Gardening Cents

A growing number of people, driven by higher grocery costs and a challenging economy, are putting in vegetable gardens for the first time. While others are expanding their existing gardens.

Some of the reasons are the higher cost of food, food safety, taste, health and growing concerns about global warming. Growing food at home is on the up-swing. Community gardens across the country have been sold out for months or some communities are starting their own programs – neighbor helping neighbor. In some city locations these gardens plots have waiting lists.

The most immediate reason is the conspicuous rise in the cost of basics like milk and bread products accompanied by price increased costs of fruits and vegetables. Food prices have spiked because of fuel prices thus instilling the desire to be more independent and have our own vegetable gardens. We are driving less, taking fewer vacations, allowing us more time to garden.

Last year I had a small garden. This year it will triple in size.  With the cost of everything increasing and as always, the desire to lose a few pounds; so it is a win-win situation all around. I get to harvest the fruits of my labor and get back into my smaller jeans.

This year I will be ready to take a stab at canning. I will probably spend maybe $50 for everything and that will be less than a week’s cost of groceries. I will get to know my neighbor better, because she knows how to can and preserve.

I will be planting more “survival vegetables”: peas, beans, corn, beets, carrots, broccoli, kale, spinach and the lettuces.

If you are starting your first vegetable garden and you do not have a yard try containers for tomatoes and herbs. Basil …hmmm… I can taste the pesto now. First time gardeners may not have any idea how much sweat equity is involved.  Your local garden center will take time to educate you so the experience is more enjoyable. Gardening is an active hobby; it is a commitment and an opportunity to chat with your neighbor and share experiences and stories. Like that the day I was daydreaming, walking through my garden and stepped into a big pile of ‘critter’ droppings  and thought it was moose droppings…  That is another story for later…

Food prices are getting to the point where having your own garden will make a difference. It is draining our budget. It was never a concern before but our grocery bill for two went from $100 a week to $140 a week just last year.

I will be planting many vegetables that freeze well and can/preserve well. I plan to dry herbs that just happen to be great companion plants for the vegetables, and I will make pickles from my luscious cucumbers and shop at my local Farmers Market for treats I was unable to grow. I am looking forward to a cellar full of potatoes and other root crops.

I plan to plant a little more then I need. Some of our harvest will also go to food pantries. Reminding me, we are a community of neighbors helping neighbors.

I am hoping to take $20 to $40 a week off my grocery bill. This is in the low range. Hypothetically, a $100 investment could produce $1,000 to $1,700 worth of vegetables, keeping in mind variables such as weather that are totally out of our control.  I could use that to pay on my tax bill.

There is something both rewarding and exciting to go out and pick the fruits of your labor and then to sit in your home, in the dead of winter, eating a hot bowl of pasta smothered in some of the most delicious Pesto sauce, made right from your own garden.  Does not get any better!

Have you ever wanted to grow your own vegetable garden? One of the most satisfying feelings is that of eating food that you have grown yourself. Home grown foods are also better for you, and you can save money on groceries besides. If you want a garden but don’t quite know where to start, here are some basics to get you started.

First of all, think about where you will plant your garden. Because vegetables need a lot of sunlight to grow, you will need to choose an area that gets at least six hours of sunlight a day. Soil quality and drainage is another factor that needs to be considered. If the soil isn’t of good quality, you might have to add a commercial soil to give it the nourishment your plants need.

All gardens need to be located in an area that is near a water source, at least within range of a long water hose that can be used for watering. There can’t be too much soil moisture, however. Your garden won’t grow very well in boggy soil.

After you have decided on the location for your garden, it’s time to prepare the soil. You can hire someone to till the ground, rent a roto-tiller or, if the area is small, use an old fashioned shovel. Don’t try to dig when the ground is too wet. In fact, there should be very little moisture at all. If the ground has never been tilled before, it may need to be tilled two or three times before it is ready for planting. Be sure that you rake out any weeds or grass. If your soil needs fertilizer or other enhancements, this is the time to add it. Follow the directions on the package for the correct amount to use for your type of soil.

Now, choose your plants. Of course, you’ll want to choose vegetables that you like to eat. But, you also need to take into account the amount of space they need to grow, whether they will grow well in your climate and how difficult they are to grow. Choose plants for your first garden that do not require heavy maintenance and that are easy to grow.

Once you have decided what vegetables to plant, get ready to plant them. Depending on the type of plants, you’ll want to create rows or mounds evenly in the area. Vegetables that are grown from seed may need to be started in small pots and protected inside the house before planting them in the ground. Seedlings or larger plants can be put directly into the garden.

Pay close attention to the weather before you start planting. Be sure that all danger of frost has passed before planting your garden. You also don’t want to plant right before, or after, a heavy rain.

It is not extremely difficult to grow your own vegetables. You can find informational material online or get gardening books from the library or book store. Having your own vegetable garden is a very satisfying project.

I’m painting the inside of my garden shed. It will be used as a retreat and has a cot inside for naps. The shed has no windows. Currently the shed door and walls have been sanded and ready to be painted. Inside there are two lights. I would want the door painted a color that I could look at if I have to close it.
