A beautiful garden in a home lifts the spirit and makes the environment calm and serene. Almost everyone desires to have a nice garden but maintaining a garden is also hard work. The most important task in garden maintenance is lawn mowing. This not only helps to cut the overgrown grass but also helps in designing the garden.

Help At Hand
We have here a few tips for lawn mowing that will make your task easier and will also help you get good results.

1. Prepare your lawn mower before embarking on to the grass cutting. Check if all the mower’s parts are in good condition. The blade of the mower should be sharp. Blunt blades of the mower do not cut grass effectively and can also damage the blades of grass. You can sharpen the blade with a blade sharpener, or if the blade is too old you can replace it. Check the air filter of the mower. It should be clean, free from dirt and debris. Regularly oiling or greasing the moving lawn mower parts is a must. The engine oil should be replaced periodically. For checking the periodicity, you should consult the mower user manual.
2. Mowing is an art. Just moving the mower over the grass will not give you the desired results. You should follow certain rules of lawn mowing. And the first rule is to mow your garden only when it is completely dry. Mowing when the grass and soil are damp can damage your grass. Sometime it even leads to uprooting.
3. You should maintain a minimum height of the grass. Cutting the grass too short sometimes destroys the whole grass as it gets dried out due to sunlight. The optimum height of the grass blades should be 3 to 4 inches. Moreover, it is observed that when the grass is too short, the weeds get nutrition and sunlight to grow and thereby takes over the whole garden.
4. If the grass in your garden has grown really tall, then you have to do mowing in steps. This means you should cut only one-third of the grass blade at a time. You should then mow your garden after 3 to 5 days.
5. Some people remove all clippings of the grass. If the grass blades are not too tall, then leaving the clippings in the garden will help as they act as a good fertilizer.
6. Move the mower in different directions. This will discourage the grass from growing in any one direction.

Besides following the tips given above, you should read the lawn mower manual properly. Follow all the safety instructions given in the manual. There are different kinds of grasses like Fescue, Rye, Bent, Bermuda, Buffalo, Carpet, St Augustine, and the maintenance of all of them vary. You should get some information on them like the height to which they should be cut and the best time to mow them before you start lawn mowing.
